WotLK Imey's Prot Paladin Guide (2024)

These are my critiques, opinions, and input (it's not all critique) on the guide as it is initially presented.

> Stat Priority & Weight
> Agility & Strength: Personal Preference
Strength as a mitigation stat (block value), as far as I am aware, the block value cap (which should only be applied to shield slam abilities, iirc) is -incorrectly- in place on mitigation from the stat here on Warmane.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
I'm also surprised that dodge and parry aren't mentioned here. I feel they should be. Especially since you should be gemming for these stats instead of strength/agility if threat isn't a concern.

>Are you often finding yourself off-tanking bosses?
I feel that the value of block value and avoidance should be mentioned here, as an off-tank's duty is often that of tanking a number of adds.

@Talents
> Improved Judgements (2/2): Essential for a flawless 868 rotation
Why is it an 868 rotation, when it normally is a 6969 rotation? Only 1 point here is required to meet that rotation. An additional point is useful if latency is high, but otherwise, not so much.

> Heart of the Crusader: Okayish, filler
This is going to be provided by any Ret Paladin and certain Shamans (I believe Elemental?). So I get why you call it "Okay-ish", but why is there no mention of Benediction (useful for mana sustain) and Imp. Blessing of Might?

> Conviction & Crusade
I feel that it is necessary to point out that Crusade is a stronger talent than Conviction, and that Conviction should be only used as a filler (if necessary) until reaching 3/3 Crusade.

> Seals of the Pure
Most threat problems are on the pull. Unfortunately this doesn't really help that. I would advise priority on Ret talents instead, if threat is what you are after. If you are after Holy talents such as Aura Mastery, then naturally a 5/5 Seals of the Pure is fine.

> Reckoning
Since the mention of "coming soon", figured I would give my input.
I would only suggest using this talent when you only plan on tanking bosses that do not parry haste, or bosses that do parry haste but their damage is largely irrelevant to you. If you run with two Prot specs, then getting this in one of them would be OK. But I'd have to advise against it.

> Spiritual Attunement (1/2)
I feel that there should be a mention that 1 point is mandatory in the description, or that it should be listed under the "Essential Must Take Talents".

> Judgements of the Just
Why is this only listed for the HoJ CD?

> Divine Intellect
The mana you gain from this talent is extremely minimal. I'm of the opinion that Unyielding Faith can be a competitive talent on some encounters. More appropriately concerned, however, that this is mentioned and Benediction is not.

> i-stun-every-valk-wave-tank
I don't believe it is wise to take a point out of Redoubt. If you are concerned about the CD of your HoJ, points should be taken out of Judgements of the Just, as you only get 5sec CD reduction per point as opposed to 10sec CD reduction from Imp. Hammer of Justice.

> Glyphs
I believe that Glyph of Holy Wrath is worth mentioning, especially if you are concerned about stuns on the Lich King encounter. Even more-so if you are off-tanking.

> Glyph of Consecration
This glyph messes with the 6969 rotation, as it alters the CD of Consecration. It's also not really a threat gain. It's more of a mana efficiency glyph.

> Glyph of Salvation
You mention that the glyph is great when casted on a DPS or healer, but this glyph has no effect unless you cast the spell on yourself.

@Gear
I love that you made a column for gear that you recommend, and another column for items that are good options. I would suggest making it more clear what the difference in the two columns are.

> Rings
The Ashen Verdict ring, I would probably mention that the proc is RNG. Thus, unreliable in sticky situations.

> Petrified Twilight Scale
I would actually argue here that Corpse Tongue Coin has a better proc if people are interested in a trinket that procs at a low health threshold. It works very well for a gearing-up tank, and it works really well with the Ardent Defender damage mitigation passive.

@Weapons
Before addressing any weapon specifically, I think you should remember that not all Prot Paladins are Human. You've only addressed the Human expertise racial under one of them. Humans and Dwarves with both benefit from their racials with Mithrios. Since you have a section further down in the guide that addresses these racials, I'm not sure if the mention of the Human racial is appropriate, unless all racials are mentioned.
You've also failed to mention the loss of both EH (effective health) and avoidance value for using a slow (DPS; Havoc's/Bloodvenom) weapon instead of a fast (tank; Mithrios) weapon. One should take note that Mithrios provides greater stamina, and that strength doesn't just provide block value, but it provides spell power for your Sacred Shield and self-healing capabilities as well.
Overall, though, yes, I will agree that Bloodvenom can be decent if you're absolutely desperate for hit rating. However, there are other ways you can address that issue.

> Slow Weapons vs. Fast Weapons
Why is your math based solely on Havoc's Call vs. Mithrios when you've said that you prefer Bloodvenom Blade? Also, would you mind going into detail within the guide that these sorts of weapons are only necessary when you don't have proper and reliable threat redirections (Hunters & Rogues), or competent uses of Hand of Salvation/Protection in your raid?

> Libram of the Sacred Shield
It should also be noted that this libram is superior for off-tanking multiple adds when threat isn't too much of a concern.

@Enchants
> Greater Inscription of the Pinnacle
Actually pretty good if you need the defense rating.

> Leg Enchant
Jormungar Leg Armor is a cheap alternative that could be listed.

@Gems
Defense and expertise gems should definitely be mentioned for those who do not meet the caps.

@Professions
Jewelcrafting and Blacksmithing are special professions for lesser geared tanks, in that they are very versatile in what stats they can provide. This is important for those lesser geared tanks because they will be working to achieve their stat caps.

@Consumables
Scrolls can be useful when you are missing a Druid in the group. Also, Rumsey Rum Black Label (which can be purchased from a NPC here) stacks in addition with all of the other mentioned buffs, for those of you who like farming consumables or getting the absolute max stats.

Edit:
P.S. I would also like to say that this being a guide, I feel that it should be more oriented towards players who are learning. Keep in mind that better and more knowledgeable players will not need a guide, and thus, the bulk of your audience will be those who are searching for a guide - not those who will want to argue about what is the top 0.0000X% of EH, Threat, DPS, or whatever sort of parsing.

Great and very well written guide, solid points regarding 2 set vs 4 set.
I am calling an absolute havoc incoming from the 'MUH 2.SET IS SUPERIOR, I DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTHER OPINIONS' folk, godspeed.

I would agree that it is unreasonable to not be willing to accept other people's opinions and points of view. However, there also isn't any need to make a pre-emptive call out on it, as that only incites drama. Also, someone may have an opinion where they disagree with facts, but that doesn't change what facts are, and that doesn't mean it is acceptable to attack or refute those facts because someone believes they are entitled to their opinion. Preferences are preferences, and they should be left at that. The guide itself has had effort applied to distinguish preferences from facts, so let's keep it at that, shall we?
